Summer Sinus Problems To Be Aware Of

If you are one of the 37 million Americans who have sinus problems, you know there can be a bit of a break during the summer months, but not all that much. Although spring and fall present the greatest challenges, there are still summer sinus problems to be aware of.

Pollen Is Still The Culprit

During the summer you may experience itchy eyes, sneezing, and nasal congestion from the grass and weeds. There isn’t much you can do about it except stay indoors, and sometimes that doesn’t even help. At least stay inside during the morning hours, and if you must go out in your car, keep all the windows closed and use the air conditioner.

Change your AC filters at home frequently, and if you live in a home with carpets, be sure your vacuum cleaner has a HEPA filter.

Plan a trip to the beach for vacation. It’s the best place to avoid pollen.

Make An Effort To Avoid Irritants

Mold, auto exhaust, and smoke are some of the worst irritants that will exacerbate your sinus issues. Make an effort to avoid being near smokers or campfires.

Chlorine is another irritant to avoid when possible. Don’t dive into a pool, as this will make it easier for the chlorine to get into your sinus cavities. Wear a nose clip to keep water out. Lakes, rivers, and the ocean are better choices.

Saline Nasal Spray Can Help

Be sure to use an over-the-counter saline nasal spray. It is important to keep your nasal cavities moist during summer. Use it frequently during the day.

Getting on an airplane can dry out your nasal passages, so use it frequently if you are flying, plus drink lots of water.

Nasal Irrigation Can Help

Keeping your nasal passages free of viruses, bacteria, and other irritants can help reduce any sinus pain or infections.

Lean over the sink and rinse your nostrils with warm salt water. If that is too cumbersome, try a neti pot, which you can find at any drug store.

When Meds Don’t Work

Using over-the-counter meds like Claritin, Zyrtec, and Sudafed usually will help with minor sinus issues. If they are not reducing symptoms, you may need a prescription antibiotic or a steroid nasal spray. There is no reason to suffer with sinus issues during the summer.
